Our 100th Post

I can't think of a better use for our 100th post, than to ask you to join us here at ArnoldNYC.

There's a time in everyone's life, when you are finally asked to come sit at the Adult's table. That time is now for a few of us. With the new move finally happening, it opens the Kids Room wide open – eager to fill with bright new creative talent looking to make amazing work and think up insane ideas. Is that creative you?

Arnold NYC and the super fun KidsRoom is looking for new talent hoping to make a splash in advertising. From Hershey's to Topps, Alberto Culver to Mike's Hard Lemonade, Lee Jeans, Cotes Du Rhone, Boiron, Starbucks Ice Cream and many more – needles to say, there's a ton to do.

Summer Studies

Every summer we find ourselves asking, what's a great place to sit outside and have lunch or where can I find a drink outdoors after work? Is Mr Softee more likely on 16th or 17th? Where is a great iced coffee other than Starbucks? With Summer just around the corner (June 21st), wouldn't it be great to know all these questions? We think so.

Over the next month or so, we'll research our area (about a 5 minute walking radius around Arnold NYC) 23rd to 10th Street, 7th to 3rd Avenue with what interests us. Then we'll take our findings and make them accessible to us all. These will be our Summer Studies.

Last Friday, I attended the PSFK Conference in lower Manhattan and picked up some fun ideas, found a bit of inspiration, learned some new names and wrote down a couple interesting websites. Now, I would like to share with you...

Rob Walker (Author & Theorist)
Significant Objects: "A talented, creative writer invents a story about an object. Invested with new significance by this fiction, the object should — according to our hypothesis — acquire not merely subjective but objective value. How to test our theory? Via eBay!"
The idea may have stemmed from Joshua Glenn's Taking Things Seriously.

Steve Powers (Artist aka ESPO)
A Love Letter For You: "Love Letter is a project by Stephen Powers with the City of Philadelphia Mural Arts Program and is sponsored by the Pew Center for Arts & Heritage through the Philadelphia Exhibitions Initiative."

Ouigi Theodore (Entrepreneur)
Brooklyn Circus: "The Brooklyn Circus is an emerging mens and womens boutique and lifestyle brand which began in 2006 in a small shop on a side street in Brooklyn, New York City. The Brooklyn Circus has proven a highly influential brand to the youth and the youthfully spirited. After all, Experience is Everything."

Nick Feltron (Designer)
"Nicholas Felton spends much of his time thinking about data, charts and our daily routines. He is the author of several Personal Annual Reports that collate countless measurements into a rich assortment of graphs and maps reflecting the year’s activities."

He also introduced me to Amazon's Mechanical Turk: "Amazon Mechanical Turk is based on the idea that there are still many things that human beings can do much more effectively than computers, such as identifying objects in a photo or video, performing data de-duplication, transcribing audio recordings, or researching data details. Traditionally, tasks like this have been accomplished by hiring a large temporary workforce (which is time consuming, expensive, and difficult to scale) or have gone undone."

Andy Spade & Anthony Sperduti (Creative Director & Entrepreneur)
They said a great quote, which I would like to repeat, "For every accountant you hire, hire an artist." A couple of their fun projects: The Liquor Store, and Blind Gift Wrapping. And they get their books printed by Lulu.

Tina Roth Eisenberg (Creative Blogger)
Teux Deux "TeuxDeux is a simple, designy, browser-based to-do app and the first collaboration between studio-mates swissmiss and Fictive Kin." Tina (Swiss Miss) also started a weekly creative session called Creative Mornings, which hosts different speakers from all areas of practice.

Erik Proulx (Writer & Producer)
Erik, once a fellow Arnolder...Arnoldnite...Arny – whatever we may call ourselves here went on to create a smart, funny and eye opening film called, Lemonade. "It's not a pink slip. It's a blank page."

John Dimatos (Researcher)
While at NYU's Interactive Telecommunications Program, John worked with fellow students and colleagues to develop items like the Water Canary, and the Rapid FTR with the help of like-minded companies like Thought Works. "ThoughtWorks is not your typical company. Talented, driven and principled people who are passionate about software, brought together because they want to do something amazing."

Zach Lieberman (Artist & Developer)
DIWO=Do It With Others was Zach's key focus during his 15 minutes of fame followed by the loudest applause of the day. His work, care and intelligence kind of gives you that tingling feeling. Here's a bunch of links from his talk...Drawn, Eye Writer, IQ Font, OpenFrameworks, and YesYesNo. All awesome and jaw dropping, or as Lieberman called it, "the open-mouth moment (the pathway to someone's heart)."

Peter Weijmarshausen (CEO)
Shapeways "We want to be a fun, inspiring place where you make your own 3D designs come to life using 3D printing."

Steven Grasse (Creative Director & Entrepreneur)
Steven has creative some of the coolest brands like, Hendrick's Gin, and Sailor Jerry while running his shop Quaker City Mercantile. He has now gone and bought a farm, a store and what seems like nearly half a town in NH to continue to grow his brands like Root, while bringing a Transcendentalism revival to the community and perhaps further. Oh, and Art in the Age, too.

Candy Makers Cut the Calories, by Cutting the Size

A nice little write up in the New York Times about a new spot coming out of Arnold NYC.

(...In a new television ad, by the New York office of Arnold Worldwide, part of Havas, which had its premiere this week, an actress by a pool reaches for an unopened Almond Joy bar. Just as her hand touches the brown, white and blue package, it transforms into brown, white and blue Almond Joy Pieces, which, smiling, she pops into her mouth...)

Oh Joy!

A chocolate candy treat for the eyes. we just finished the "Island time" Almond Joy & Mounds spot with MK12 & David Wynnn Jones using a great mixture of CGI and live action to make me and you drool for more. A great new spot for the kidsroom and ArnoldNYC. more on this later!
